How to Release Tension in Your Arms on Stage

Place your hand gently on the two bumps of your collar bone at the base of your neck.

This is your sterno-clavicular joint.

It is also the only place your arms are connected by a joint to the rest of your body. In your awareness, follow the collar bone all the way out to your shoulders. Allow your shoulder blade to be part of your awareness.

The collar bone, shoulder blade and arms are your whole shoulder structure. With your hand at the base of your neck, feel what it’s like to think of your arms coming out of your back.

Allow the rise and fall of the rib cage with your breath and notice movement in your chest, back and shoulders.

Next time you are on stage, a little pause to put your hand on your chest can quickly bring back this experience of arms lengthening and releasing - allowing for less holding and greater ease of movement and breath.
